Guinea Pigs

Why would anyone have a guinea pig? "Why wouldn't you?" would be my response.

They are great little animals.

We have about 15 of them at present, each with their own little personality. Give them a call or rattle the gate latch and they will all come out squeaking hello. Our pigs (as I affectionately call them) live in a colony.
They seem to enjoy this set up and make choices as to whom they spend time with. Of course there is the occasional scuffle but generally life seems very peaceful.

They live in a large area, sharing space with about 15 fruit trees and 10 chooks. The down side to this set up is the fruit tree trunks must have some protection from the gnawing of the residents. I like to give them prunings to gnaw on instead.

The majority of our pigs are smooth coats, some are rex and we have a few crested. My very favorite pig was a buff crested sow. Buttercup was a real character, always the first to come out and meet us to see what little treat we had. Sadly she now rests under a David Austin buff coloured rose bush.

Guinea pigs spend most of their time indulging in their favorite pastime. Eating!
